Caprese salad

Caprese Salad is a simple and elegant salad made with different juicy, ripe tomato slices and cream mozzarella. Garnished with fresh basil leaves and drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, then sprinkled with salt and pepper. A classic Italian salad and my personal favorite!

Caprese salad (also known as insalata caprese) is a classic Italian salad from the island of Capri. It was made from just a handful of fresh ingredients and couldn't have been easier to make. It's simple, juicy, creamy and always what I ordered when traveling to Italy. Imagine sitting in a cafe on the Amalfi coast, looking out at the ocean and eating a caprese salad. The most perfect experience ever.

But when I saw fresh organic tomatoes at the market this week, I knew I had to whip it. Warm weather and juicy tomatoes make the caprese salad feel like a summer on a plate. It is light and refreshing and is perfect for an appetizer or small meal that will not accommodate you.

Caprese Salad Ingredients

The most important thing with Caprese salad is the freshness of the ingredients. For this reason, tomatoes and basil are fresh and the best ingredients are used in summer. Here's what's inside:

Tomato: Divide on the most juicy tomatoes you can find. Whether organic heirloom tomatoes or plum tomatoes, they just ripen without a hint of green and will almost explode.

Mozzarella: Don't touch the cheap stuff again. Grab the fresh, creamy, authentic mozzarella (mozzarella di buffalo also wonderful) ball for the most excellent texture. You will usually find it filled with water.

Fresh Basil: Remove plants from the plant just before serving fresh. You want a bright green color and a fresh aroma that makes you feel like you're entering an Italian garden.

Olive Oil: I'm sure you've gathered the theme here, but it's important for fresh olive oil. Take a bite with a perfectly cold pressed, extra virgin olive oil. It doesn't need to be expensive, but it needs to be good. California Olive Ranch and Lucini are two of my popular brands.

Balsamic Vinegar: I will be the first to say that balsamic vinegar is not classic or necessary for a caprese salad, but boy I love it. When balsamic is reduced, it is thick, sweet and sweet. You can add or leave, it's up to you!

Salt and Pepper: Use a flaky salt such as Maldon Salt or triangular sea salt for this excellent texture. Do not use table salt only. Add fresh chapped black pepper for the final touch.

How to make Caprese Salad

Once your tomatoes and mozzarella are sliced, just lay them on a plate. Then, pick up some of the fresh basil leaves (I personally like the little baby leaves) and put them under a few coats. Apply olive oil and balsamic reduction on top and sprinkle with salt and pepper before serving. How easy is that? And if you want to enjoy a nice bottle of wine, of course go for it!
